Choosing the Right Eyeglass Frames
Oculi Vision • Mar 03, 2021

Trying on a new pair of glasses is all fun and games until it comes time to make a decision. The frames may look may attractive on display but quickly become less-than-flattering when you try them on. The shape and the size can feel wrong, or they may just not fit, at all. So, how do you choose the best eyeglass frame for you? It can seem like a difficult task due to the wide variety of choices available, and do you really have to try on pair after pair until you finally pick the perfect fit? To narrow down your choices, you must understand your face shape and know the styles that compliment your individual features.

What is My Face Shape?

To know your face shape, pull your hair away from your face and look directly into a mirror. Take a close inspection of the overall shape of your face, or opt to trace your face on the mirror using a dry-erase marker. We have summarized the primary face shapes below. Use them to decide which shape fits your face description the most, and consider the available frames which best compliment it.

Inverted Triangle

An inverted triangle face shape is widest at the forehead and gradually narrows towards the jaw. If you have this face type, try to create a balance by having an eyeglass frame that is slightly wider than your forehead. Glasses with detailing at the lower portion of frames are good options, too.

Oval

An oval-shaped face is the most versatile shape because of its balanced proportions. Generally, people with this type of face shape have a slightly narrower jawline than forehead and have high and angled cheekbones. To maintain the balance of your shape, look for frames that are as wide as the broadest part of your face. It’s also best that you avoid any oversized frames.

Round

A round face shape has a wide forehead, a rounded chin, and full cheeks. This face has curved lines with the width and length in the same proportions and no angles. When looking for frames for this type of face shape, stay away from rounded and short glasses. Instead, look for frames that can make your face appear thinner and longer, such as square or angular, narrow eyeglass frames. Frames with transparent bridges are also good choices.

Square

A square face shape has a broad forehead, a horizontal jawline, with width and length of the face in roughly the same proportion. If this is your face type, aim to add contrast to your strong features. Make your face look longer and soften its angles by selecting narrow ovals and frames with more width than depth. Consider staying away from geometric and square-shaped glasses.

Rectangle

A rectangular face shape has elongated, angular lines with equally wide cheekbones, forehead, and jawline. You can soften your face's angular lines by choosing rounder frames that are a little thinner. Also, ensure that the width of your eyeglass frames are a bit wider than your cheekbones.

Heart

A heart-shaped face has a wide forehead, narrow chin, and rounded cheeks. When you have this shape, try to reduce the top of the face's apparent width by choosing frames that are wider at the bottom.

Knowing how to choose the right eyeglass frame doesn't have to be complicated. It can even be fun, especially if you showcase your personality through it.
