Types of Contact Lenses
Oculi Vision • Mar 21, 2022

Vision correction has come a long way over the years. What began with simple spectacles expanded to include countless kinds of contact lenses. Millions of patients prefer contact lenses over glasses for a variety of reasons. They are convenient during exercise, they won’t fog up, and they can offer a more natural field of view. Though, with so many options available, it can be hard to choose the right contact lenses for your needs. Let’s take a moment to explore the different types of contact lenses and how to choose the perfect pair.

Soft Lenses

Commonly called soft lenses, these are also known as hydrogel or silicone hydrogel lenses. These relatively thin contacts have a gel-like feel to them. They are by far the most popular type of contact lens and represent roughly 90% of the U.S. market.

Many people prefer these lenses because they are very flexible. This tends to make them quite comfortable to wear compared to other types. Soft lenses are also permeable, which means they easily allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. Almost anyone can enjoy soft lenses, giving them a great deal of utility. They are typically the best option for patients who need to wear contacts for long hours during the day.

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses (RGP)

These lenses are made of fairly durable plastics. This tends to have two major effects. On one hand, they are much more resistant to build-up, which allows them to provide a much sharper image than other types. However, their durable nature means that they are more rigid than soft lenses. This means they can sometimes be uncomfortable to wear.

Despite this minor drawback, many patients choose these lenses due to their cost-efficiency. RGP lenses can last much longer than some other alternatives. They may remain usable for up to a year with daily cleaning and sanitation. RGP lenses can correct many vision issues and are fairly easy to maintain over time.

Disposable Types of Contact Lenses

Of all the types of contact lenses, daily disposable lenses are perhaps the most convenient. This is because they don’t require much in the way of cleaning or maintenance. There are many different types of disposable lenses, but daily disposables are the most popular of them all. Daily disposables are also one of the most prevalent types of lenses used when traveling.

Other lenses are marketed as “disposable,” but they are really “extended wear” options. These contacts can be worn for between a week and a month before replacing. However, extended wear lenses do require daily cleaning and disinfecting before reuse. Make sure you know exactly what you’re buying to avoid misuse.

How to Choose the Right Contact Lenses

The path to the right contact lens starts by discussing options with your eye doctor. Ultimately, most people tend to begin with soft contacts. Due to the comfort, they are often the preferred option. They are also able to treat most vision problems. If you experience issues with soft lenses like excessive dryness, consult your eye doctor to discuss other options.

While rigid lenses are more durable and cost effective, it can take some time to get used to them. Their lack of comfort may cause many patients to struggle to use them comfortably. Thus, soft contacts are a good option for most beginners. Whatever you choose, be sure that your contact lenses are fitted properly, and you know how to handle them safely.

Contact lenses are worn by millions of people to improve their vision and quality of life. Recent innovations make them more adjustable, affordable, accessible for many patients.
