What Not to Do after Eye Dilation
Oculi Vision • Nov 07, 2022

Eye dilation exams are a common type of vision test. Optometrists perform them to get a better view of their patients’ eyes and look for early signs of disease. During these exams, physicians use special drops to dilate a patient’s pupils. While these drops are helpful, they can also cause blurry vision and light sensitivity for a few hours. For these reasons, it’s essential to avoid putting yourself and others at risk after this exam. Here are our suggestions for what not to do after eye dilation.

1. Refrain from Driving

Once your pupils dilate, it’ll be harder for you to see in low light or focus on nearby objects. That’s why it’s best to avoid driving for at least four hours after your exam. If you must drive, be sure to go slowly and have someone else with you who can help if needed. It may also be beneficial to wear sunglasses as the bright sunlight can bother your eyes.

2. Steer Clear of Machinery

As with driving, it’s best to avoid using any kind of machinery for several hours after your exam. This includes power tools, bicycles, and kitchen appliances. Again, this is because it may be hard for you to see well and react quickly enough to avoid an injury. If you must use any piece of equipment, then use caution, go slowly, and have someone nearby in case of emergency.

3. Try Not to Rub Your Eyes

It’s important to not rub your eyes after the dilation exam. This can cause irritation and even damage to the eye. If your eyes feel dry or itchy, then use artificial tears or ointment as directed by your physician. Consider laying down and resting your eyes, and avoid dry, windy, or dusty environments.

4. Don’t Stare into Bright Light

Bright lights can be uncomfortable for a while after an eye dilation exam. Exposure to bright light can also cause your pupils to constrict more slowly, delaying your overall recovery time. To minimize symptoms of light sensitivity, wear sunglasses or a hat with a brim when outdoors, and dim indoor lights if you can.

5. Avoid Children

Young children tend to move around quickly and unpredictably. After eye dilation, it may be difficult for you to keep track of them if they’re under your supervision. If possible, it’s best to avoid being around small children altogether for several hours after your eye dilation.

6. Delay Chores and Close Work

Dilated pupils can cause blurry vision when looking at nearby objects such as books, newspapers, smartphones, and computer screens. It may also be difficult to focus on tools, electronics, knitting needles, cooking utensils, and cleaning supplies. If you must do close work within a few hours of your exam, try sitting further away from the object than usual or taking breaks about every 20 minutes.
